The hands…

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Shawl making is an art with many facets and there is much more than meets the eye. It goes through an assembly line like process. Each craftsmen does his part skillfully till it finally reaches the “karigar” (embroiderer). My agent Iqbal, who is an accomplished master designer took me around Srinagar to visit all these talented craftsmen who are involved in the art of shawl making.

Once the master designer has sketched his motifs onto paper, he passes them on to a wood carver. With patience and accuracy, he chips away and etches the motif on wooden blocks.Wood CarverA carved wooden block

Which is used by the printer for stamping and the motifs are inked onto the shawl with a technique called block printing.

The stole reaches the embroiderer who discusses the color harmonies with the “naqash’ and embroiders it. It is an art that demands patience, dedication and long hours of sitting in the same posture.

Different perspectives!! Different perspectives…embroidery wool becomes a toy

It’s taken two years…researching, putting information together, working on the colors and embroidery patterns of the shawls, travelling to Kashmir, meeting the talented karigars (craftsmen), it is a natural progression to put it all down in this blog and share it .
